Mermaid Parade

Today was our Keep Portland Weird adventure.

We took the max light rail downtown, which is always interesting. It was initially standing room only. There were seats available, but two ‘entitled’ folks decided they needed to spread out to take up six seats. Given their glaring demeanor, it didn’t seem worth the confrontation.

At the next stop, some spots opened up, but they were filled with mysterious crumbs from departing children. I’m pretty sure it was a corn muffin, but who knows, I sat on it anyway hoping for the best.

We arrived downtown to the sketchy Skidmore stop near the waterfront, which is home to many homeless people, since it is near the much needed shelter. Jasmine and I marveled how the pigeons played ‘chicken’ on the tracks before the arriving trains.

Our goal today was to witness the Mermaid Parade. Yes, mermaids. Apparently, this is the third year, but the first I’ve heard of it. We walked to the opening ceremony, but not much was going on yet. So we browsed the nearby Portland Saturday Market. We found an amazing portrait artist, and watched him draw from start to finish.

Finally, the paraded kicked off, or rather tailed off. We loved how the parade made special effort to encourage wheel chair adults/kids to participate. On our way home, we got a close up view of the famous Portland sign.

Rose Garden Amphitheater: Diaspora Dance Theater

We’ve been overdue for attending a Rose Garden festival. Last time was in 2013. Tonight we watched Diaspora Dance Theater.

The weather was hot, but a nice breeze and tree shade kept us cool. Jasmine insisted ice cream was still needed. And who can blame her.

Back in 2013 she danced on the lawn with the other kids, now as a teen, we talked and played cards.

I tried to convince her to stay after the concert to tour the garden, but she said no. She was behind on her Netflix queue.

When we got home, I made her read 30 minutes before turning on the tube – because I’m one of those parents.

Book Talks

I went to three great book talks at my Powell’s this month.

Terry Brooks
Author of the fantasy series Shannara. These were my first adult books I read as a child.

Timothy Zahn
Author of many Star Wars novels. He was ushered in by cosplayers.

Finn Murphy
Author of a memoir of long-haul trucker.

2018 Ten Tiny Dances

Egyptian belly dancing, beatbox, and Irish step are just some the dance performances Jasmine and I enjoyed on this sunny Saturday.

Board gaming: Ticket to Ride

At our board gaming club, we played Ticket to Ride. And I won!

“Players collect cards of various types of train cars they then use to claim railway routes in North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn. Additional points come to those who fulfill Destination Tickets – goal cards that connect distant cities; and to the player who builds the longest continuous route.”
